Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are a form of dermal scarring that develop when the skin is placed under rapid or prolonged tension. This leads to disruption within the deeper collagen and elastin structures, resulting in visible linear markings on the surface.

They often begin as red, purple, or darker-toned lines before gradually fading to a lighter, more textured appearance over time.

Commonly seen in:

  • Pregnancy (abdomen and breasts)
  • Adolescents during growth phases
  • Individuals experiencing rapid weight change
  • Muscle gain associated with intensive training

While stretch marks are medically harmless, they reflect structural changes within the skin. This means treatment is focused on improving skin quality, stimulating collagen, and refining texture rather than complete removal.

At Enhance Clinispa, assessment is key. We take a consultation-led approach to understand the stage, depth, and condition of the skin before recommending a tailored treatment plan.

What causes stretch marks?

Discover what causes this condition and how it can it can impact you.

Hormonal Changes

Certain medical conditions, such as Cushing’s syndrome or connective tissue disorders, can weaken the skin’s structural integrity. This increases the likelihood of stretch marks developing, even without significant physical stretching.

Inflammation

Ongoing inflammation within the skin can impair collagen production and repair. Over time, this reduces the skin’s resilience, making it more susceptible to tearing when stretched.

Diet

Poor nutritional intake can affect skin quality at a cellular level. Low levels of key nutrients such as vitamin C, zinc, and protein may compromise collagen synthesis and slow the skin’s ability to repair and adapt.

Medications

Long-term use of corticosteroids, whether topical or oral, can thin the skin and reduce collagen density. This weakens the dermal structure, increasing the risk of stretch mark formation.

Genetics

Natural changes such as puberty, pregnancy, rapid weight gain, or muscle growth place the skin under sudden tension. When this occurs quickly, the dermal matrix cannot keep up, leading to visible stretch marks.
