What are dermal fillers?
A dermal filler is a substance, natural or synthetic, that is injected under or into the skin for soft tissue augmentation.
As we age, our skin stretches, developing wrinkles and facial creases. Dermal fillers are a cosmetic procedure that adds volume to your facial features and fills lines and wrinkles. This is a temporary procedure with results lasting anywhere from 6 months to 18 months.
We can apply dermal and lip fillers across multiple areas of the face. Examples of facial areas that can benefit from a filler include the chin, cheekbone, ear lobes, nose, jaw, and more.
What's our process?
Before treatment
- As with any cosmetic procedure involving using needles to inject substances into the skin to enhance your appearance, choosing a specialist and professional skin clinic is critical before you proceed. Our Bolton clinic recruits only the best practitioners with years of experience performing safe and effective dermal filler injections.
- You should only agree to receive dermal fillers after an initial consultation with the practitioner that will perform your procedure. This consultation allows the specialist to examine your medical history, discuss why you want treatment, and ensure it is a suitable and safe choice. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions or state concerns.
- The practitioner may use a pen to draw markings on your face to show where the injections will occur. Pictures may be taken to help provide the best procedure and to show the before and after results.
- Following a consultation, the practitioner will let you know how best to prepare for your first session. Advice may vary, but generally, it will include avoiding blood thinning medications, specific supplements, topical products and alcohol. It’s also recommended not to wax, bleach, tweeze or use hair removal cream on the area
During treatment
- On the day of your first treatment session, you should arrive without makeup and heed the advice given to you beforehand.
- The area to be treated will be cleansed, a numbing cream will be applied, or a nerve block will be injected. These methods will numb the skin and ensure you experience minimal discomfort during the procedure.
- The practitioner will inject the filler with a thin needle, massage the area and evaluate the results, adding more filler as necessary.
- You should experience little to no pain. Most people say they feel a slight pinch or sting at most.
- The procedure is expected to last between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the areas to be injected.
After treatment
Before receiving treatment at our Bolton botox clinic, we will invite you to a pre-treatment consultation so Dr Fab can check your medical history, discuss your concerns and examine your facial anatomy, as well as give you all the facts that you need so you can make an informed and educated decision about whether [treatment] will be suitable for you. Only then will Dr Equizi agree to administer the treatment.
Step 1
- After you have received dermal fillers, the practitioner will cleanse your skin and may apply an ice pack to ease any pain or swelling. They will provide you with essential aftercare instructions that you should follow.
- Aftercare can include regularly applying a cold compress to the area, avoiding hot activities like hot showers or strenuous exercises, and using a topical treatment to soothe the area. The practitioner will provide full instructions. A further appointment will likely be made to check your results in the following weeks.
- The side effects are dermal fillers are usually minor. You may experience swelling and bruising, which should disappear after two weeks. You should immediately contact the practitioner or healthcare provider if you see signs of bleeding, infection or an allergic reaction.
- Your practitioner will be on hand to help you with any questions or concerns you have after treatment. Don’t be afraid to get back in touch if you are worried about something.
- The filler treatment you require will likely only need one session. However, this is a temporary procedure, and results can last anywhere from 6 to 18 months. Repeat treatment is recommended to benefit from dermal fillers fully.

What Dermal Fillers Are Used?
We can work with different types of dermal fillers, but we specifically use the Aliaxin and Ellanse range. Dr Fab will assess your face and use his specialist knowledge and skills to identify where to inject the filler.
Aliaxin is an Italian product containing hyaluronic acid, a natural substance in the eyes and joints. This filler delivers smooth results and integrates well into the facial tissues, providing clients with a natural look and a low complication rate. Aliaxin is a high-quality filler from IBSA which creates its own hyaluronic acid.
Ellanse, on the other hand, is a collagen stimulator that delivers results lasting between 2 to 5 years. This filler contains microspheres of polycaprolactone. When injected into the body, Ellanse becomes bioresorbable and helps to produce collagen which creates a younger and improved appearance.
What Are the Side Effects and Risks of Dermal Fillers?
In the hands of a suitably trained and experienced practitioner, dermal fillers are safe. Common side effects are swelling and bruising lasting up to 2 weeks, depending on the filler used and its application. Most negative press has been with permanent fillers, which we do not use.
Less common problems are visible filler under the skin, lumps and nodules, accidental injection into blood vessels, external compression of vessels, and granuloma formation.
We minimize risks by using a blunt cannula to inject in areas of higher risk. Dr Fab uses advanced injecting techniques to reduce risk and give the best results.
We check all dermal filler work two weeks later and any adjustments made to compensate for initial swelling and to optimize results are included in the price.
How long before an event should I have treatment?
Ideally at least 4 weeks to allow time for the check-up after treatment.
How long do fillers last?
Depending on the grade of filler it could last 6 – 12 months, although some people can hold on to filler for years. However, this is academic as the ageing process marches on with ongoing fat and bone loss. The best approach is to pop in 2 or 3 times a year, look at your previous photo, see what’s changed and plan treatent accordingly.
